Stress Getting in the Way of your Weight Loss?

Stress Getting in the Way of your Weight Loss?

At some point you have to realize that weight loss and working out aren’t just a physical process, it is a mental process as well. You can be doing your best using workout equipment on a regular basis, but if something mental is blocking your progress, you won’t be able to focus and exercise to your full potential.

Stress is the most detrimental type of mental obstacle because it can also affect you physically. It breaks down your physical and mental strength and can lead you down the road to obesity even if you are regularly using workout equipment.

The Mental Effects of Stress

There are so many negative effects of stress. The first and most common is that the brain has so much to think about it has a very hard time concentrating on one. So when it is time to use your workout equipment, your mental fog makes it hard for you to put yourself into it fully. Also, stress can give you a loss of self-confidence and in result give you lack of motivation. That workout equipment will start to collect dust. It takes determination, persistence, and perseverance in order to make using workout equipment and working out a habit. All those traits are mental traits. If you are weak in that area, it is sure to make physical fitness a hard thing to achieve.

Another mental effect that stress can have on you is by creating insatiable cravings for sweets, fats, and high glycemic carbohydrates. All three of these food groups are the opposite of a good diet for weight loss. Other mental effects of stress include anxiety attacks, mood swings, and high blood pressure. As you can see, stress is a dangerous thing to carry around every day.

The Physical Effects of Stress

Stress causes negative physical effects mostly through the release of cortisol. The over secretion of this hormone into the body can cause physical conditions that inhibit weigh loss or cause weight gain. Such conditions include thyroid problems, hyperglycemia, breakdown of muscle mass, a weaker immunity system, and a decrease in bone density. Many of these physical effects of stress can lead to worse problems that may inhibit your ability to use workout equipment at all. All of the physical effects of stress directly contribute to increased abdominal fat which can make you at higher risk of stroke and heart disease.

All of the effects of chronic stress are bad, especially for your waistline and your intentions of using workout equipment. Times of relaxation and rest should be made a priority in life, even if few and far between.
